Hi everyone,

Most of us are aware that the concept of a career has evolved dramatically over the last couple of years with huge layoffs and The Great Resignation.

Gone are the days when a career meant following a single path within a single organization. Today, managing one's career requires understanding deep personal motivations, aligning with core values, and being agile enough to adapt to new opportunities.

While not everyone will have access to the kind of world-leading career advice I was fortunate to receive at MIT, it has never been easier to learn from thought leaders in the space and understand what recommendations have stood the test of time.

In this week's newsletter, we'll explore three approaches to managing your career:

  1. Aligning your career with your values through Clayton Christensen's "How Will You Measure Your Life?" approach.
  2. Leveraging your strengths to add value in any organization you join, using Peter Drucker's "Managing Oneself."
  3. Rethinking the traditional linear career path model as we adjust to extended lifespans and rapid technological innovations with April Rinne's Portfolio Career model.

Clayton Christensen: Finding Fulfillment and Integrity in Your Career

In his influential book, "How Will You Measure Your Life?", Clayton Christensen encourages us to rethink our career strategies through the lens of personal fulfillment and integrity. He poses three pivotal questions:

  • How can I be happy in my career? Christensen suggests that happiness comes from opportunities to learn, grow in responsibilities, contribute, and be recognized. He argues that, when practiced well, management is among the most noble of professions.
  • How can I ensure enduring happiness in my family relationships? He advocates for thoughtful resource allocation across the various "businesses" of our lives—work, family, community, and faith—emphasizing that neglecting any can lead to dissatisfaction.
  • How can I live a life of integrity? Christensen warns against the "just this once" mentality in decision-making, promoting a focus on long-term goals and purpose to avoid ethical pitfalls and career derailment.

Peter Drucker: The CEO of Your Career

Peter Drucker's "Managing Oneself" addresses the modern necessity of self-directed career management. Drucker contends that as traditional company-driven career management wanes, the responsibility falls on individuals to steer their careers over spans that could last 50 years or more. Key aspects include:

  • Understanding Strengths and Weaknesses: Through feedback analysis, identify what you excel at and where you fall short.
  • Learning and Working Styles: Recognize whether you work better alone or in teams and prefer structured or dynamic environments.
  • Aligning Values with Work: Ensuring your ethics and values resonate with those of your organization can enhance job satisfaction and output.

April Rinne: Embracing the Career Portfolio

April Rinne introduces the dynamic concept of managing a "career portfolio" rather than a linear "career path." This approach embraces a variety of professional engagements that reflect personal growth, adaptability, and the blending of diverse skills and experiences.

  • Dynamic and Self-Designed: A career portfolio is self-curated, allowing individuals to incorporate varied roles—from paid jobs to volunteer positions—that align with their evolving interests and capabilities.
  • Preparation for Future Opportunities: By maintaining a portfolio, professionals are better prepared to seize or create new opportunities, making them invaluable in today's unpredictable job market.

The insights from Christensen, Drucker, and Rinne converge on a crucial point: successful careers in the 21st century require proactive self-management.

Whether aligning your work with your values, leveraging your strengths, or crafting a diverse career portfolio, the key to longevity is a deep, introspective approach to your professional life.

By becoming the CEO of your career, you not only adapt to the changing world but also pave the way for a fulfilling and enduring professional journey.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Have a great weekend,

Chris Mannion
